The "Our Town" Project - Almost Done!
The Our Town newspaper was published by the Narberth Civic Association beginning in 1914 and given what was going on in the world was pretty consistent. It is a window on this town and the people and businesses in it. It ceased publication in 1949 and was amalgamated into a Lower Merion newspaper - a precursor to the Main Line Times.
The actual newspapers are still in the Narberth Community Library. The Civic Association first transferred the papers onto microfilm and recently in 2006, we then moved the images into PDF format. The original microfilm and a copy of the DVD has been returned to the library. Now, the PDFs are indexed - meaning that the text within each edition is searchable - and we will shortly be adding a Google search on this page for this portion of the site to search within all the newspapers - say for Ricklin's Hardware to bring up all the references to Ricklin's. Thanks to Aaron Muderick of Narblog for indexing all the PDFs.
We are having to increase our web hosting space since all the files are > 2 Gb but once up this should be a great resource to the Narberth community and an easy way to look back at the beginnings of Our Town. |
